The International Women’s Health Coalition (IWHC) recognizes that women’s and girls’ human rights, health and equality are essential to social, environmental, and economic justice for all.

We envision a world in which all women and girls can exercise their human rights to:

  • access the information, resources, and services they need to enhance and protect their health and achieve their full potential;
  • make informed decisions about their sexuality, relationships, pregnancy, child-bearing, and marriage and all other matters related to their sexual and reproductive health and rights, free of discrimination, coercion, and violence; and
  • participate in and assume leadership of civil society movements to advance sexual and reproductive health and rights.


IWHC advances the sexual and reproductive health and rights of women and young people, particularly adolescent girls, in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. IWHC furthers this agenda by supporting and strengthening leaders and organizations working at the community, national, regional, and global levels, and by advocating for international and U.S. policies, programs, and funding.

IWHC builds bridges between local realities and international policy by connecting women and young people in the Global South to key decision-makers. In doing so, IWHC brings local voices to global debates and in turn, makes global processes and policies more understandable and actionable at the local level.


This position will be based in New York and will manage relationships with supporters throughout the United States, with a focus on local constituencies on the East and West coasts. The director will manage a team consisting of fundraising staff with two direct reports—one each in New York and California—and associate support in New York. They will develop and implement a comprehensive organizational fundraising strategy for individual donors, which includes event-based fundraising, and individual donors, with a focus on major gifts.


  • Works closely with the vice president for development and communications to strategize and organize its existing individual giving program in order to identify, cultivate, and steward donors to the International Women’s Health Coalition with the short-term goal of raising 30 percent of the organization’s income from individual donors.
  • Continue to develop existing markets (in New York, California, and elsewhere), and assess the potential for major gifts work in new markets in the United States. This strategy could extend to work outside of the United States in time.
  • Develop and enact cultivation and solicitation strategies for a portfolio of prospects and donors with an interest in sexual and reproductive health and rights and the capacity to make annual investments of $25K+.
  • Oversee the work of the development officers in New York and California to manage networks of relationships with prospective and existing donors (including Leadership Councils in the Bay Area and New York City), drawing from a pool of donors giving at the $1K+ level.
  • Oversee the work of New York development staff to produce the organization’s flagship annual event, the Annual Dinner, currently raising $1.1 million for the organization. Strategize to grow the dinner’s annual revenue target.
  • Work closely with development staff in New York and California to steward the Leadership Council, and produce cultivation events for a growing community of supporters.
  • Facilitate and coordinate communication with prospects and donors. Work to convey the organization’s five-year strategic plan and programmatic goals to donors for the purpose of meeting IWHC’s revenue targets.
  • Assist with the strategy for and creation of written communications appropriate to a donor’s interests.
  • Provide mentorship, feedback and support to direct reports.
  • Lead and participate (with IWHC Board and executive leadership) in gift solicitations
  • Travel commensurate with expectations for fundraising activity.
  • Monitor quarterly and annual activity to achieve revenue goals.
  • Review and verify donor recognition lists.
  • Perform additional development-related activities/efforts at the request of the vice president of development and communications.
  • Other duties as assigned.


The ideal candidate will be an exceptional fundraiser with an entrepreneurial spirit and a commitment to sexual and reproductive health and rights advocacy and women’s movement building. They will come with a desire to build and articulate a comprehensive individual giving program, stewarding an already well-defined portfolio of donors on both coasts, and growing that effort in conjunction with staff focused on giving at all levels (including institutional donors, recurring donors, etc.). The ideal candidate will have:

  • 10+ years of experience in fundraising, including direct donor relationship experience.
  • Experience and/or deep knowledge of developing fundraising strategies for individual donors and organizing a fundraising team.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple assignments and quickly changing priorities in a fast paced setting.
  • Candidates must have proven ability to close gifts of $25K+ and experience securing gifts from prospects.
  • Experience managing a team and mentoring staff highly desired.
  • Outstanding oral, written, communication and presentation skills—including the ability to listen and target communication to specific interests of varied audiences.
  • Comfort in online fundraising toolsets and databases including Blackbaud (Raiser’s Edge NXT) and/or Salesforce.
  • Experience qualifying and disqualifying prospects using research and instincts.
  • Proven ability to build deep and lasting relationships with donors and board members.
  • Professional integrity and the desire to effectively represent and promote IWHC externally.
  • A team player with exceptional communication skills.
  • Bachelor’s degree, plus additional related academic courses or professional training preferred.
  • Experience working in women’s and/or human rights organizations, advocacy organizations, grantmaking organizations is highly desired.
