Job Description

About The Position
The Director of Marketing and Communications develops and oversees execution of the marketing vision and strategy for the organization, including comprehensive communications and digital strategies. Externally, the Director’s priority is to ensure that Uncommon is recognized nationally as a top-performing CMO that is uniquely impacting the broader public education sector; and as the employer of choice for school leaders, teachers, and staff. Internally, the Director’s priority is to ensure a strong sense of community and pride across all 49 schools, so that everyone who works for Uncommon feels connected to the larger organization and mission and is well-equipped and eager to serve as an Uncommon “ambassador.”

The Director of Marketing and Communications reports to the Chief Advancement Officer.

Job Responsibilities
• Develop and lead marketing strategies to attract high-quality leader, teacher, and staff applicants
o Work closely with the Recruitment Team to understand candidate profiles, recruitment needs, and outreach strategy
o Drive communications, social media, online, and collateral strategies that build interest among high-quality applicants
o Build the organization’s brand as a great place to work and grow
o Collect and analyze data to drive marketing-recruitment strategies

• Develop and lead marketing strategies to build Uncommon’s national brand as a top-performing CMO with extraordinary student achievement results that is uniquely impacting the larger public education sector
o Design and execute a communications and social media strategy
o Build and manage online presence (e.g. Uncommon website, job-search platforms)
o Create video and print materials to effectively tell the stories of our schools and students
o Build and oversee systems to effectively capture stories and news from all 49 schools and to share them externally
o Work closely with the Talent Development and Recruitment Teams to develop a strategy and system for building Uncommon’s brand through participation in key conferences and convenings, and applications for key awards, recognitions, and honors
o Work closely with the Chief External Officer (who oversees the organization’s media work) to leverage all media opportunities to build Uncommon’s thought leadership and brand

• Develop and lead marketing strategies to attract donors
o Work closely with the Development Team to understand donor profiles and philanthropic need
o Create targeted communications, collateral, and materials for donor visits, meetings, and events

• Develop and lead internal marketing strategies that ensure a strong sense of community and pride across schools and build “ambassadors” for Uncommon
o Provide schools and the Home Office with resources and guidance to enable brand commitment, compliance, and consistency
o Manage online Marketing tools/services (e.g. website, swag store, photo gallery)
o Manage concepting, creating, and capture of photography and video across schools and events
o Build and oversee systems to effectively capture stories and news from all 49 schools and to share them internally
o Create and disseminate key collateral and swag to ensure a consistent “ambassador” brand identity among all staff members, schools, and regions
o Work closely with the K-12 Content Development Team (who oversees internal professional development workshops and retreats) to leverage all opportunities to build internal culture and pride among leaders, teachers, and staff

• Directly manage and coach a three-person Marketing Team
o Grow and develop members of the Marketing Team through check-ins, ongoing feedback, and team meetings
o Create a strong and positive team culture
o Use data to drive the team’s achievement of its goals

Qualifications
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities
• Exceptional creative, strategic, and analytical skills
• Outstanding project management skills – ability to see the big picture and to manage the individual tasks
• Strong attention to detail
• Solid written and verbal communication skills
• Strong relationship-building and influencing skills, including with outside vendors
• Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and take initiative
• Demonstrated ability to effectively manage against ambitious project budgets, timelines, and scope
• Excellent organization and time management skills
• Urgent and able to effectively prioritize
• Skilled at delivering creative direction and able to concept video content from scratch

Minimum educational level
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in marketing or business preferred

Experience required
• 5-10 years of Marketing experience

Compensation
