StoryCorps was founded in 2003 with a mission to preserve and share humanity’s stories in order to build connections between people and to create a more just and compassionate world. Over the past 14 years, we have provided more than 400,000 people from across the U.S. with powerful opportunities to record interviews about their lives, to pass wisdom from one generation to the next, and to leave a legacy for future generations in our archive at the Library of Congress. Select interviews are edited for weekly broadcast on NPR’s “Morning Edition” and/or inclusion in our animations and podcasts. Together, these stories reach a broad national audience of tens of millions on public and digital media.

Our work has been widely recognized with several George Foster Peabody Awards, a MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions, the 2015 TED Prize, and a 2016 Emmy award for our animation, “ Traffic Stop .”
With an annual budget of $11 million and more than 80 employees, StoryCorps is seeking a dynamic and accomplished Chief Development Officer or (CDO). The CDO, working closely with StoryCorps’ CEO and its Founder/President, is charged with providing the strategic vision and oversight for all fundraising efforts. The CDO will lead a team of experienced fundraisers charged with the implementation and management of a robust, creative, and sustainable development program designed to increase revenue from several funding sources. A top priority is building support from individual donors and expanding revenue from the annual gala. In addition, the CDO will play a leading role in board development and build and manage a major donor portfolio.
Under the CDO’s guidance, the development department, with a staff of 5, will raise funds across public and private sectors and generate support from national foundations, government sources, and individual contributors. With an eye toward maximizing resources, the CDO will oversee all departmental activities, including the creation and execution of development plans, departmental budgeting and reporting, and the establishment of fundraising systems and procedures. The CDO will work closely with the Founder/President, the CEO, and the Directors of Institutional Giving and Individual Giving to cultivate and secure major gifts and grants while also collaborating with the Board of Directors and its committees to further the institution’s goals.
Personal and Professional Qualifications
StoryCorps is seeking an individual with exemplary leadership skills and the ability to work collaboratively across the entire organization. The CDO must demonstrate a bold and innovative approach to fundraising and be a quick study of StoryCorps’ past successes and future opportunities. He or she must possess exceptional communication and writing skills, demonstrate excellent interpersonal judgment, and enjoy being part of an energetic and ambitious team. The CDO should have demonstrated expertise in: individual giving (StoryCorps is eager to convert our rapidly growing social media followers into donors.); moves management fundraising, and major donor acquisition and stewardship. Experience with institutional fundraising and annual events is also required.
StoryCorps records, shares, and preserves stories from a diverse range of American voices — from our Griot Initiative to preserve stories of African Americans, to our Historias Initiative to collect the experiences of Latinos. - Serve as a member of the Executive Team; collaborate with and support the CEO, President/Founder, Board of Directors, and staff to ensure the organization’s expanding trajectory over the next several years and to fulfill our strategic plan fundraising goals.
- Oversee StoryCorps’ Development department and staff, providing leadership, strategic vision, and planning to ensure that StoryCorps meets and surpasses its annual fundraising goals.
- Oversee and direct all events, including StoryCorps’ annual gala.
- Represent StoryCorps with prospects and donors and in other public settings to advance the organization’s mission and visibility.
- Work with the Individual Giving team to develop and build a sustainable individual giving program with a clear pipeline and moves management process.
- Develop/approve all written fundraising materials for use in print and online.
- Oversee the development and tracking of proposals, reports, and major donor correspondence.
- Perform other duties to support the organization’s Development function, as Assigned.
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10 years of experience in the development field in positions with increasing responsibility.
Experience leading a development team responsible for raising at least $8 million. Event planning experience raising at least $700k+.
Strong individual giving experience, including a proven track record of donor acquisition, conversion, and retention.
Effective direct response writing skills with a record of successful donor appeals, renewals, and stewardship and demonstrated experience with direct response strategies and techniques, including both direct mail and digital communications. Deep understanding of CRM best practices, strategies, and working within a sophisticated CRM to communicate and appeal to donor base.
- Exemplary verbal and written communication skills and impeccable attention to detail; strong organizational and project management skills; and the ability to work under tight deadlines and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Extensive experience providing staff supervision and leadership; strong team-building, conflict negotiation, and collaborative skills.
