Full-Time Strategic Initiatives Research Associate
100Kin10 unites 280 of the nation’s top academic institutions, nonprofits, foundations, companies, and government agencies to address the nation’s STEM teacher shortage. Together, we are tackling the systemic challenges to getting and keeping great STEM teachers in classrooms nationwide.
In our first five years, we secured commitments for 100,000 excellent STEM teachers by 2021 and built a highly engaged, collaborative network of partner organizations immersed in collective problem-solving and shared learning and willing to be vulnerable and trusting with old and new allies alike. In the fall of 2017, we publicly launched the grand challenges, an unprecedented system map showing the 100 root causes of our nation’s STEM teacher challenges. We are now mobilizing our partners and the broader field to address the grand challenges.

About the Strategic Initiatives Team
100Kin10 introduced the Strategic Initiatives Team in September 2017, following the launch of the grand challenges. The Strategic Initiatives Team operates as a nimble innovation hub within the organization by running experiments to test how to catalyze change around the grand challenges. Alongside this, we identify new and support current experiments by providing a foundation of (1) knowledge and research, (2) progress to date, and (3) trends monitoring and synthesis.
Strategic Initiatives Team members thrive in collaborative work environments; are comfortable with ambiguity; are tight on vision and strategy but loose on tactics; embody curiosity and the desire to learn; and constantly search for opportunities for improvement.
About the Role
The Strategic Initiatives Research Associate will be responsible for all work related to identifying and supporting experiments. This includes (1) tracking progress against the grand challenges, (2) growing and developing the knowledge base supporting the grand challenges, and (3) monitoring trends across a broad range of relevant content, such as STEM, education, social innovation, and systemic change.
The Research Associate will synthesize all data into insights and ideas that will inform current experiments and lead to new experiments. (S)he will also help in designing the tactics used across progress-tracking, knowledge-generation, and trends-monitoring.
In addition to working cross-organizationally, the Research Associate will manage external consultants that are contributing to and supporting projects.
The Strategic Initiatives Research Associate should embody the qualities of the Strategic Initiatives Team (collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity, curious, etc.). (S)he should also have a strong orientation toward adventure in the workplace, and view failure as a step toward gaining knowledge and experience. This individual is hungry to work on ambitious, unchartered goals that, although tough to crack, are fun to pursue and highly-rewarding.
+ Progress tracking, which will likely include the following activities:
- Manage the project to identify progress metrics
- Design and implement methods to gather and analyze data around the metrics
- Synthesize progress from metrics into key insights
- Support the public dissemination of progress on grand challenges
+ Nourishing the knowledge base, which will likely include the following activities:
- Design and manage an approach to regularly refreshing the grand challenges data
- Coordinate the commissioning of new white papers and identification and development of new bright spots
- Manage and improve the grand challenges website, including updates, user engagement, etc.
- Design new and improve existing tactics for identifying and sharing best practice research about the grand challenges, in collaboration with Strategic Initiatives Director
+ Trends Monitoring, which will likely include the following activities:
- Cultivate and host engagements with trends monitoring groups (e.g. Teacher Forum) to gather outside expertise to identify and build out emerging ideas
- Gather trends about partners’ priorities, projects, and interests, by talking with partners directly and by working closely with the Community Team
- Regularly monitor, synthesize, and internally disseminate STEM, education, systems change, and social impact newsletters, etc.
- Design new and improve existing trends monitoring techniques as needed, in collaboration with Strategic Initiatives Director
+ Synthesizing, which will likely include the following activities:
- Analyze all inputs into insights for potential and current experiments, in collaboration with the Strategic Initiatives Director
- Identifying new areas to investigate based on insights
- Approximately five years of experience working in STEM education or education research
- A strong interest and knowledge base in the STEM education field
- Affinity for social innovation and systems change preferred
- Background in experience design preferred
- Experience working with external consultants or vendors preferred
- Strong writing and communications skills
- Excellent research and analytical skills
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, with strong follow-through
- Excels at working collaboratively and across multiple teams
- Demonstrated program or project management skills preferred
- Self-directed and proactive in an environment with dynamic priorities; able to prioritize competing projects and multi-task, exercise independent judgment, and take initiative
- Ability to work independently and as a part of a team in a fast-paced environment on deadline-driven projects
- Team-oriented, open-minded, and flexible, with a high-level of comfort working in an experimental and ambiguous setting
- Eagerness to learn and grow professionally, with a strong desire to learn and grow in a feedback-rich environment
