Job Description

The SIFMA Foundation is seeking a Vice President of Development to provide leadership overseeing the full complement of organizational advancement efforts including annual giving, major grants, RFPs, sponsorships, fundraising and events, and special campaigns – and their related communications. SIFMA Foundation’s Vice President of Development will be an accomplished, visionary fundraising professional able to serve as the key driver of a high-impact development and outreach agenda and strategy.  The successful candidate will develop and guide the implementation of a strategic plan for advancement aimed at increasing the financial capacity of the organization and raising awareness and visibility. He/she will leverage the SIFMA Foundation’s brand, assets, relationships, and opportunities to create excitement about the important work of the Foundation, increase its donor base, and build capacity based on best practices. SIFMA Foundation’s Vice President of Development will bring innovative approaches to prospect cultivation and support, and strengthen relationships with new and legacy donors including foundations, corporations, and individuals. The Vice President of Development will serve as a member of the SIFMA Foundation’s leadership team, working with the President and the Development Committee of the Board of Directors to produce targeted revenue outcomes.

Duties and Responsibilities:  

  • Work closely with the President and Board of Directors, staff and key constituents to execute a comprehensive development program based on the Foundation’s long- and short-term needs, and identify and generate revenue for the enterprise
  • Implement and oversee the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of potential funders—individuals, corporations, foundations—and expand Foundation’s strategic relationships in collaboration with Board members, SIFMA/members, and key constituents
  • Partner with President on reporting including designing and compiling reports, ad hoc presentations, briefings, and communications for internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide grant reports and updates on programs and Foundation activities to funder community
  • Oversee grant-related communications, publicity, promotion and public information activities, including serving as the primary writer and editor of grant proposals, presentations, reports, and budgets for funding projects, fundraising letters and appeals, and other written material and correspondence in support of fundraising and development initiatives
  • Establish and administer constituency development programs including through the annual fundraising dinner/event, conferences, program awards ceremonies, program alumnae cultivation, special projects and events, and planned giving initiatives
  • Work with SIFMA staff to ensure delivery of grant components, detail grant results and impact, to reflect enterprise-wide messaging and themes in development materials and to help reinforce a favorable public image among internal/external audiences
  • Build scalable models to meet growth goals, establish performance measures, monitor results, and evaluate/report on effectiveness of Foundation’s advancement strategy
  • Develop and maintain the database of grant opportunities, funder profiles, and legacy gifts to the Foundation and stay informed about trends, new developments, and emerging opportunities in the philanthropy and fundraising fields as well as in education/financial education grants/RFPs
  • Staff the SIFMA Foundation’s Development Committee
  • Set up meetings as required for Foundation executives to meet with grant-making officials
  • Provide leadership, inspiration, and mentoring to Foundation staff for integrated support of the SIFMA Foundation’s development efforts


The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, driven and sophisticated professional excited by the opportunity to lead the SIFMA Foundation’s development efforts. The candidate is a strategic planner, highly organized and detail-oriented, and a proficient, diplomatic communicator. He/she is able to take the lead, work on numerous complex tasks simultaneously, flourish under pressure, and interact with all levels of personnel. The candidate is proactive and resourceful, with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills and a savvy relationship builder – able to translate vision into action by motivating others and moving the agenda forward. He/she will be energized and passionate about the mission and activities of the organization and will have:

  • A comprehensive understanding of fundraising mechanics and extensive, current knowledge of fundraising trends across multiple markets and media, including online fundraising options
  • Record of personally identifying, cultivating and soliciting major corporate, private, and/or individual donors and proven success in securing six and seven figure gifts/grants
  • Excellent development-related technical writing and marketing skills, with direct experience in the production of high-quality fundraising marketing materials
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data and create appropriate frameworks and models
  • Proven management, tracking and reporting on successful grant implementation
  • Articulate and persuasive communication style, with well-honed relationship-building acumen
  • Knowledge of the local and national philanthropic and nonprofit arena
  • Broad functional experience in areas of sales and solicitation, strategic planning, marketing, promotions, and events
  • A strong work ethic and a results/solutions-driven, positive attitude
  • Tremendous energy, passion for and/or experience in the field of education
  • Ability to collaborate, inspire teamwork, and motivate others to work toward a common goal
  • A professional demeanor and personal style that elicits trust from prospects, staff, and board
  • Impeccable integrity, judgment, and discretion needed to handle confidential matters
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible leadership experience in fundraising or a related field
  • Advanced degree or equivalent experience in a related field
